Self Esteem and Confidence

Self esteem and confidence are important factors in anyone’s life, from a toddler up to a senior. If you do not have either of these in your live, you may find that things are difficult for you or you will have a hard time accomplishing things in your life.

To understand the concept and to help you increase your self esteem and confidence, it is helpful to know what both of them are. Once you know what they are, you are able to determine your self esteem and confidence level and work on increasing them if it needs to be improved.

Self esteem is how you feel about something, its value or worth. With the word self, it means how you feel about yourself and your self worth. If you have good self esteem, you know you are worthwhile, but you do it without being a snob or better than others.

Self confidence is how you present yourself. If you feel you can take on something new and challenging, you have confidence. If it scares you and you don’t know if you can do it, then you do not have confidence.

If you feel that you need to increase your self esteem and confidence levels, there are things you can do for this. Chances are if you need to increase one, you may need to increase both.

First of all, it can be helpful to figure out why you have low self esteem and confidence, as you can then change those behaviours around for increase and positive self esteem and confidence.

How do others treat you? Do they constantly tell you that they believe that you can do something, but you don’t believe them? Or do they tell you that you are not capable of doing it, and you believe them? Both of these are cases of low self esteem and confidence, but you control both of them. In the first case, you need to teach yourself that you can do the project. This may mean getting a mentor to help you, taking classes, or anything else you need to do to prepare. Tell yourself you can do it, and smile. Once you have accomplished it, remind yourself you can. As for those that say you cannot, show them that you can!

Do you negative self talk yourself? This is a sure fire way to decrease your self esteem and confidence. You should tell yourself only positive things, but if you have to have a negative, follow it up with a positive. For instance, what a mess my house is but, if I just take 30 minutes, I can make my kitchen beautiful and sparkly! You will accomplish it because you know you can.

There is no reason why a person should be lacking in self esteem and confidence. If you feel you are, you need to take steps to improve yourself and gain the self esteem and confidence you need. If you do not know how or cannot make yourself feel better, you may need to locate a therapist to help you with your self esteem and confidence issues.
